Everyone knows that putting is one of the most important parts of your game.

No matter what level of golfer you are, 40-50% (or more) of your shots during a round are going to be on the putting surface. Without a putting stroke that is going to hold up under pressure, you’re pretty much doomed to keeping the same handicap for years to come…

Who wants that?

The Problem With Most Putting Instruction

Putting for hours on end is not only tedious for most golfers, but they rarely have a clear direction to their putting practice.

Putting is an art and a science. You should be learning and developing your skills from people who’s methods have a proven track record.

Without clear goals in mind for your putting, you can spend hours upon hours working on it, and not really see any improvement.

Instead of going to for quantity of time spent on the range, go for quality.

“Drive for show, putt for dough” as the saying goes. If the flat stick is your friend, you can always be competitive. Without it, there is little chance your handicap will go down over the long run.

If you’re a golfer like me, you probably:

Know that you need work on your putting

Enjoy talking with other golfers about putting

Have spent hundreds of dollars on the latest and greatest putter to hit the shelves

After all of these methods didn’t work, you may have even attended putting clinics, camps, and looked for the answer in the latest issue of your favorite golfing magazine…

These methods can work for a little while, but then many revert back to old putting habits.

What is a Frustrated Golfer to Do?

So if we know that putting makes up 40-50% of our score, we don’t yet have a plan for how our putting is going to improve, and we’ve tried other putting methods that just didn’t stick over the long term, what do we do?

You do have a few options:

You can continue to disregard your putting as an important part of your game, and simply hope that great ball striking can make up for it.

You can talk to your local pro, who is probably a great putter, but spends the majority of their time practicing and teaching the full swing

You can learn directly from an internationally renowned expert in putting, who has spent years developing a method for putting that has helped every level of golfer, from the beginner to the accomplished amateur, to players on the PGA tour.

I think the correct answer is obvious. Instead of trying to “uncover” a hidden method for yourself, and spending weeks, months, even years building a dependable putting game, why not learn from someone who has done all of the legwork for you?

Here is a list of just some of the golfers that Geoff Mangum’s method’s have helped:

2003 PGA Champ

2006 PGA Runner-up

2010 PGA T5

2009 US Amateur Champ

2010 US Amateur Champ

2010 US Amateur 3 of 4 semifinalists

2010 British Amateur Champ

2010 British Open T14 as amateur

World Amateur Ranking 1-3 sweep

NCAA Men’s Div-I #1 Player

NCAA Women’s Div-I #1 Player …

..and many more.

Steve Elkington Improves His Putting

Steve Elkington was not at the top of his game in 2009. His weakness in putting particularly showed. From 3-5 feet, he ranked 157th..

But one day, Elk found an amazing video of Geoff’s about delivery speed of the golf ball. Here is a quote from Elk himself:

“Check out the video that Geoff Mangum put up on delivery speed…..I found Geoff on the internet, got him to come to Houston in the off season and help me with my putting……1st time I’ve ever been in the top 10 in putting on tour in 25 years.”– Steve Elkington

In 2010, after a lot of hard work with Geoff Mangum, Elk ranked 2nd in the same category. He also went on to finish 5th at the PGA Championship and win almost $1,000,000 on tour in 2010.

Great dancers have two elements which they perform exceptionally well and they are timing and balance. If you could apply timing and balance to your golf swing, these two basic skills will improve your golf game over night.

I recently watched an old video of Fred Astaire one of the best dancers of all time hitting golf balls. In the video you see him dancing around a line of golf balls and then while still moving his feet he hits perfect golf shots.

Fred Astaire uses his dance steps and swings his golf club without even taking a pause to balance himself.

For those golfers who have been taught to keep everything below the waist stable this will be an enlightening experience as it challenges many golf instruction theories.

When Astaire hits ball after ball while dancing without pausing you will see and even comprehend a deeper knowledge to great timing and balance for your golf swing. Many of the older golfers playing in the 30′s, 40′s, 50′s, and 60′s all moved they lower bodies. Not surprising really when you think about it as many people back in the day ALL danced.

If you learned to dance you learned how to shift your weight in balance and you also learned the essential skill of timing. Balance in golf and timing in golf are the two main skills that will make the biggest difference in your golf swing.

When you watch this free golf dancing video you will instantly understand how important balance and timing is. Great movement of any sort is based on balance and timing. When you address the golf ball in a static position or a stationary position it is very difficult to initiate great timing, hence the reason the old timers used the forward press.

This forward press was like the first step in a waltz and the rest of the golf swing completed the dance. Many golfers use swing thoughts to control their timing which I would suggest is less effective than using a physical type movement to control timing.

Shifting of your weight in balance is completely natural. You simply transfer weight from one foot to another. For example in the back swing you start with weight on your front foot, a slight forward press and you step back on your back foot where most of your weight will end up.

The shifting of your weight this way makes it far easier to shift weight in balance and also creates better timing.

If you ever dreamed about hitting the golf ball over 300 yards the golf instruction method written by Dan Shauger is well worth your time investigating. Golf Legend Mike Austin is the inspiration behind this style of golf instruction.

About Dan Shauger and Mike Austin

For those that haven’t heard about Mike Austin he is the holder of the World record for hitting the longest drive of 515 yards in 1974 at a Seniors Open event. His record still stands today even though there have been significant advances in golf technology when it comes to drivers and even the balls we use.

Working with Mike Austin, Dan Shauger acquired privileged information about the golf swing that very few people have had the opportunity to learn about. Dan is a tradesmen which makes him the ideal person to go into the detail of exactly what makes this golf instruction work so well for golfers to hit long and straight. The key components of this golf swing are

* throw the golf club from the top of your swing
* Use your hips in lateral or side to side motion to shift your weight
* keep your head still by using the lower body
* Special compound pivot action of the hips

Throwing the Club Head from the top of your swing is a big no, no in most golf instruction. However when you move your hips using a compound action the throwing of the club from the top will actually occur somewhere down the bottom, or where your would normal release the club. The important factor here is that you must feel that you are releasing. It is especially important that this also happens slowly until you learn to do it faster. When you master the compound pivot or side to side action of the hips which is the key driver of the golf swing you will realise how simple this golf swing method is.

Many of Mike Austin’s methods are not taught by golf professionals as some of his principles are in opposition to what they teach and believe, however the proof is in the pudding, who else do you know that has driven the ball 500 yards or more! If you do a search on Mike Austin or Dan Shauger you will find many resources including online videos to learn this golf instruction method. This is helpful especially if you have a visual learning style, unlike the analytical people who learn by reading.

Free Online Golf Instruction Videos

With the help of free golf instruction videos you will be able to learn an exciting golf swing in a short period of time. You will be able to hit the ball longer and much easier as you will learn

* that bending from the hips is the natural and correct way to address the ball
* using a soft natural grip will allow you to swing faster
* lining your stance with your hips and knees line up correctly
* by cocking your wrists properly will take pressure off your back
* transferring your weight using the compound will save your back
* swinging effortlessly using these easy to learn methods is achievable

Mike Austin was a genius when understanding how to hit the golf ball long and straight and there are many free videos of his golf swing available for you to watch.

“All putts are straight.” What that really means is that golfers should always start their putts off on a straight line, even if the ball breaks thereafter.

What else can you do by hitting a ball with a slab of metal?

Even a cut stroke that initially imparts cut spin to the ball has to roll over the ground, and this rolling washes the cut spin out, so the ball ends up rolling in only one direction anyway. The real issue is how best to start the ball rolling on the line you intend it to travel on, consistently.

Physics teaches, for a slab of metal such as a putter head to send the ball rolling on a straight line, the fewer variables the better.

Fundamentally, the combination of impact point, face angle, and putter head path that is simplest for rolling the ball straight is contacting the ball with the putter’s sweet spot so that the putter’s sweet spot moves squarely through the center of the ball on the line you intend.

The three important dimension’s for straight are “square face” and “center-to-center” and “online.”

The setup and stroke needs to be consistent, not only because consistent is repeating, but because consistency allows you to learn more sharply from your ongoing experiences. When you setup and stroke the ball in the same manner, your feedback relates mostly to touch and putt reading, and you learn about touch and green reading quicker and better.

The body is a messy contraption.

Humans are designed for a wide variety of movements, as any dancer or acrobat can tell you. That’s not all that good for putting, where simple and repeatedly accurate motions are needed. Normally, the head doesn’t move, the hips and lower body are stable, and only the shoulders and limbs are in action in a putting stroke.

Again — whether you are a hands type putter, or an arms putter, or a pure shoulder putter — whatever technique you use should be kept simple and consistent.

No matter what technique you employ for the stroke, never forget that the putter’s sweet spot needs to impact the back of the ball with the face square and moving straight through the center of the ball on the intended line. If your technique doesn’t promote this in your putting, then you should change to something that does.

The setup needs to promote a straight rolling of the ball with the stroke. The simplest setup starts by placing the putter face squarely behind the ball, aimed through the center of the ball on the intended starting line to the target, with the sole of the putter flush with the green surface.

Once the putter face is aimed, then the length and lie of the putter will guide the placement of your hands on the grip as well as the positioning of your feet, upper torso, shoulders, and head and eyes.

The simplest setup

Assuming a “standard” putter 35 inches long and with a lie angle back off vertical of 19 degrees (a lie of 71 degrees measured from the ground up to the shaft) — has all joint pairs in the body aligned parallel to the start line of the putt: ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, and wrists.

Dealing with Short Pitches

Visit Swing Man Golf for longer drives and to improve your overall golf game!

I’d like to briefly go over short pitches.

Do you have trouble with getting them close? Most amateurs do…and heck, a lot of pros do too.

So how the in the world do you deal with these shots?

I used to use Dave Pelz’s system…the one where you take each of your 3-4

wedges and you make back swings such that from a face-on view, your left (for a right hander) arm goes back to 7:30, 9:00, and 10:30 positions.

Once you measure the distances of each of these shots, viola, you have some exact yardages that you can use for those odd distances.

However, there’s three problems with it. First, it’s a lot of shots to keep track

of…especially if you don’t play a lot (a good work-a-round to his is to only do the 9:00 shots).

Second, this system won’t work if your tempo is off. As an example,

I recently had a tournament where in the first round I kept coming up 11-12 yards short on these shots. This was causing me to miss greens and not make birdies or save pars…not good for my score!

After the round, I noticed what was going on, so for the second round I picked up my tempo slightly. All of a sudden I was flying the pin by 5-8 yards and was getting in to worse trouble still (usually it’s better to miss short than go over a green).

Third, the focus is too much on swing mechanics and not as much on the target.

When I think back about my best scores of 64 and 65, those two days I remember hitting long drives in the fairway, hitting the green from long approaches or missing in good spots, getting my short pitches really close, and making putts.

Regarding the short pitches, I was mostly creatively using my 6-iron to hit little bump and runs in to the green and up to the flag. It worked very well – I was just focused on hitting it from here…to there, without any thoughts ofback swing arm position.

So what’s the answer here? I’m not sure there is a right answer, but at least you’ve got three options – use the clock system, get creative, or just don’t leave yourself those kinds of shots in the first place.

Dan’s first book “How to kill the Ball” inspired me enough to invest time and money to visit the States and gain accreditation to teach this swing…..I am sure you will find your own inspiration when you invest your own time and money in your golf game by learning the special methods covered in the Books and Dvd’s.

If you have watched the many lesson videos on my website you will notice quite a sample of golfers from beginners right through to more advanced golfers who shot in the 70′s on a regular basis.

The biggest improvements you will gain will be in understanding how to swing the golf club in balance. I firmly believe that 70% of your long term succes will come from mastering weight shift and balance.

Independent internet research I did by myself confirmed Mike Austins weight shift method to be the most efficient way to move the body. In fact if you aren’t using this weight shift you could be losing at least 20 yards on every shot.

Obviously you will need to learn the basics of grip, wrist cock, backswing and the throwing of the club head. After you gain compentency in these basics most of your practice time should be dedicated to weight shift and balance.

The impact on their handicaps from learning our golf swing methods can range from a young guy going from a 17 handicap to a 9 in 6 months and reaching the match play finals of his club to a lady just learning golf to be able to use her driver for the first time.

We would love to send the Books and Dvd’s out for free for you to sample and test the proven methods of Mike Austin and Dan Shauger.

“We have an offer that will protect your investment a 30 Day Money Back guarantee”

Read the books and watch the Dvd’s for every day for the next 30 days and if you are not happy for any reason just return them for a full and guaranteed refund.

I highly recommend the Book and Dvd combinations that are available for only $34.95 to really gain maximum benefit.

How to Order All orders are processed in US dollars as Books and Dvd’s will be shipped directly from the States.

For customers in the States your order should arrive within 3 days…… for all other international orders please allow up to 15 working days.

Delivery for USA customers is $12.00 and for the rest of the world $25.00. Pay pal accepts credit cards and is the simplest system I have found for small businesses to help with providing shopping cart facilities.

For the club to apply all of the energy we put into it into the golf ball it must swing freely through as if it were a pendulum.

Using the standard roll over fore arm actions this requires great timing, since the downward un-cocking of the wrists must be coordinated and timed with the rolling over actions of the forearms.

Due to this type of arm action only those who have been blessed with excellent hand eye coordination are able to learn it easily. These people could learn to juggle or do a similarly difficult skill quickly, where those who are not blessed with these skills from birth must labor long and hard to learn it if they ever learn it at all.

Golf instructors and driving ranges love this since those struggling to improve their play (most players) need guidance and practice to make small slow progress.

When the wrists are allowed to hinge freely without rolling the forearms amazing things happen, the ball goes far and flies straight.

This type of release allows the total transfer of the energy we put into the club into the back of the ball.

The ability to allow the club to swing freely requires a relaxed grip and the correct application of the right hand hit.

This hit can best be described as a tossing action of the right hand as it passes between the left hand and the ball. The right hand must not roll over the left hand, rather it rolls under it.

Done this way all of the energy goes into the ball instead of some of it actually hitting ourselves. This hitting of ourselves is a result of the club and left arm getting into a too straight line vertically as the left wrist reaches the bottom of its travel.

Often this causes pain in the left elbow area (of right handed players).

Slicing is the bane of many high handicap players, it seems to be the single biggest stumbling block in learning the correct swing.

Slicing can be caused by a variety of factors, some of these are a too tight grip or an improper grip. A wide open club face caused by a swing type that requires a forearm roll to square the club face but does not have one. But most of the time it can be attributed to a severe out to in swing which is generally accompanied by a too steep down swing plane.

The out to in swing and steep down swing has been described as the over the top move. This means that the club travels back to the ball on a path that brings the club head into the back of the ball from outside the flight line to inside the flight line through the ball. It can be a nightmare to cure if improperly diagnosed, but simple to fix once the correct fix is applied.

Generally the player in trying to get the ball to end up farther to the left than his traditional zip into the right tree line shot pulls hard as he tries to put a more leftward starting direction to the ball. This action makes the slice worse, by increasing the out to in path of the club head through impact.

The next error he makes is to shut the club face severely at address or in lieu of that to rotate his hands to the right on the grip to get the club face more square at impact. These things never work, since they do not address the true culprit, the out to in swing path. If the player can somehow make these radical adjustments work he has handicapped himself badly as to ever getting the club to swing properly through the hit.

Once the player realizes that he is cutting across the line he must make the following adjustments to correct the flaw. First the grip must be correctly applied (see Ben Hogans 5 lessons) then the initial path of the club as the swing starts down must be controlled by the lateral weight shift. There should be no attempt to turn the hips, a simple step from the right foot to the left foot as the player attempts to bump his left hip into an imaginary wall while trying not to turn back to the ball starts the club down the perfect path every time. The swinging of the club with the arms must be slightly delayed to give the legs a chance to correctly control the club path. Once the down swing has been started this way the arms will then be able to swing the club through the hit from the inside and thus on the right path.

If the player can then learn the non-forearm rolling release he can forget his slice forever
