Shane and Ryan have their first “Putting Zone” golf lesson to improve their overall putting ability.
In this putting zone golf lesson we concentrated mainly on the importance of Distance control and the techniques we use to help us control the distance that the ball will roll on any given putt.
Ryan is in the first putting video…… demonstrating his normal putting style. Notice the D’Marco style claw putting grip!!! The kid’s don’t miss a trick when it come’s to copying the golf pro’s on tour. Ryan plays off a 15 Handicap and his brother Shane is a 17 Handicapper.
Ryan’s Claw grip style
Ryan is a very balanced golfer as you can see by his good tempo and overall action when putting. What I would like you to notice is the angle of his putter shaft in relation to the ground. The lie angle is not ideally upright enough. The second point to notice in this video is how Ryan use’s his hands.
In the golf lesson putting video below you will see Ryan using a
* conventional grip
* a putter with a more upright shaft
* a flatter head and neck position
* use of the shoulders in the putting motion
Look at the great “distance control” Ryan achieved on this particular putt.
Our practise distance was about 20 feet which in reality is where most of our second or even third shot’s into par 4′s end up. From 10 feet – 30 feet….. everything is about controlling the distance of your putt.
(Pro’s miss 60% of their putts from 10 feet) however (They usually make 90% from 3 feet).
Okay lets move on to Shane’s putting lesson. What you will notice in Shane’s putting style is quite typical of alot of golfers. An upright stance and a strong reliance on the hands to make the stroke. For Shane putting and chipping are the two area’s he want’s to improve in.
Watch Shane’s putting stroke
As you can see Shane’s putting stroke is pretty good. However during this lesson it was evident that he lacked the consistency required to be really confident on the greens. But with his new tools, techniques and with a bit of practise Shane will be able to turn this around very quickly.
Watch Shane’s Putting Stroke after a few changes
Again notice a flatter body position…..this position allows Shane to get well over the ball and most importantly it also allow’s him to turn his neck towards his target. This turning of the neck is very important for activating the brains perception of distance.
The only other aspect of Shane’s putting action we will need to work on is getting his elbows to point in more towards his body. Ideally the arms should hang “straight down” pretty much like a crane with a load on it.
2 Days after Shanes First PuttingZone lesson he achieved his lowest golf score of 80 and this was even with an 8 on the 9th hole. Most importantly Shane made only 10 PUTTS in 9 holes!!!!
These golf lesson putting video’s were taken at the Te Awamutu Golf Course and Driving range. Further putting video’s can be viewed by clicking here Geoff Mangum the puttingzone guru demonstrates.
