Putting Lesson

Husband and Wife PuttingZone lesson

The following putting videos are of Gavin and Ginny who are members of the Ngaruawahia golf club. One of the first things we cover are the type and style of putters and the benefits of straight line and two ball putters.

Basically a putter must be fitted to you and provide you with benefits for aligning and aiming. The Pendulum putter provides most golfers with these two features. A two ball style putter would be a good choice as well for alignment purposes but not necessarily for aiming.

The next area we test is aiming. Unfortunately most golfers fail this test as Gavin and Ginny found out. However by understanding how to use their putters like a ruler to make a straight line, they were able to improve their aims significantly.

Watch Ginny’s Putting Stroke

With Ginny we adjusted her set up or posture to allow her shoulders to work more efficiently. We also changed her head position when in her set up. Your forehead should be horizontal to the green which produces a flat head postion.

This flat head position enable the neck to turn down the line of the putt correctly.

Watch Gavins Putting Stroke

As you can see Gavin has great flat or level shoulders and sets up to the ball with good head position as well. With Gavin our main area of change was giving him the tempo drills we use as he already had a good shoulder style of putting.

The main points to remember for consistent putting are

1. Use your putter edge to find the line you wish to putt down
2. Aim your putter head at a point about 5 inches in front of your ball
3. Set up over your ball with level shoulders and a flat head
4. Leave a 1/2 inch gap between the blade of your putter and the ball
5. Turn your neck down your target line
6. Hold your gaze for 4 seconds
7. Bring your eyes back to a blade of grass
8. Say “One potato” and make your putting stroke with your shoulders.

The one potato tempo is governed by your “brains instinct”. Ensure you finish the back stroke with potato….NOT before.
