The "A Perfect Swing" Method.

Our first golf instruction lesson comes from Craig Frost. Craig is a 4 Handicapper from New Plymouth and he placed 10th in the New Zealand Long Drive National competition. His longest drive measured 330 metres.

Hi William

I now know why the swing you taught me is called the "A Perfect Swing". After playing golf for 20 years without a hole in one, 2 weeks after my lesson with yourself, yesterday I achieved my first ever hole in one (14th at the New Plymouth course).

He like a lot of golfers aspires to become a professional golfer and has set his goals to become the best he can be. Unfortunately his inconsistency will require some work on the mechanics of the golf swing......See Craig has 2 swings......one he uses for long drive competitions and the other he use's for normal competition golf.

What he is seeking is ONE golf swing method that will serve him well in both types of competition.

Craig was fortunate enough to have watched DVD's featuring Mike Austin and Mike Dunaway (who still even today most golfers have never heard of) With this knowledge Craig has tried to incorporate some aspects of their swings into his with varying success.

So Craig searched the internet as we do.....looking for a solution or the next big secret. Well he came across my www.golfinstruction.co.nz website.... saw that I was teaching the Mike Austin method written by Dan Shauger....and rang me for a golf lesson.

He and his girlfriend Julie drove 3 hours to Te Awamutu Golf Club and Driving Range  to see me.

Remember Craig is a 4 handicapper.....but we still needed to go back to basic's!!!! No matter what handicap you have as a golfer you can't escape the importance of good if not great fundamentals......which need to be practised regularly with focus.

This first video is of Craig's golf swing before we made any changes. Push the red button's to play or pause the video's. You can pause one video and play the other to compare the change's we made to his golf swing.

Play the top video and push the pause button to stop Craig's swing at the top.....in the second video do the same. Yeah I know it takes a little practice to pause it in the right place.

Craig is using a sand wedge in these golf lesson video's.

With Craigs old swing (top video) it is quite easy to see how his arms have controlled the upswing as evident by his bent left arm.....You will also notice how big hitters over extend the club to get as much extension as possible. Look how his head is being forced up by his shoulder and his arms.

Being accurate with this sort of action would take a lot of practice for the average golfer. But Craig has managed to hit some sub par rounds with his golf swing but he has also managed to hit in the 90's!!!! as well.

The second video is of the adjustments we have made after practicing some of the elements in the "a perfect swing" golf instruction.

Key areas to look at are.....a shorter and flatter golf swing plane as a result of using a proper shoulder turn and eliminating the lifting of the arms.

The exercise we used to get Craig to turn more was the..... Pole Drill.

Golfers who lift their arms on the back swing often give themselves a false impression that they are actually turning. But in reality they are Not..... and that by itself robs the golfer of distance and accuracy.

So that is why you will here me say "Cock and Turn".

So the major golf lesson in these videos' is the importance of a proper shoulder turn.

Watch Craig's new swing taken from a back end view. Again pause the video when Craig reaches the finish of his back swing.....to me that position is picture perfect. Also notice how easy it is for him to get back to impact position and release his powerful swing by using the proper movements of the body.

We have got rid of his Cowboy swing from the Wild...Wild.....West!!!! sorry just a private joke. Craig has suffered from a bad back because of the way he swings the golf club.

Cheers William

I've been at the driving range every night this week. Hardly any bad shots now. My drives are around 130mph (I've got a swing speed monitor) and straight, I know I was meant to take it easy for a month but couldn't help myself. Had a game on Sunday and my 4 iron was going past the others drives.

Catch u later

Craig
