To do this golf instruction drill....find a belt or piece of rope that you can tie around your body. From just above your right elbow, place or tie the rope to your left side.....Make sure it is firm. Keep your left arm free.
The intention of this rope drill is to restrict any excessive movement you may have in your swing.....so we are tightening thing's up and relying on good movement of the body to hit the ball.
If you follow Richmond's video..... we cock our wrist's.....move our hips and finally turn our shoulders. The turning of the shoulders is most important. With the rope tied around you.....you will find it very difficult to move your arms, which is exactly what we want. You will find you will need to TURN your shoulders to feel that you can put distance into your shot's.
Your follow through will also be restricted. What Richmond is learning in this drill is how to maintain angles from the top of the swing right through to the end. This is taking it to the extreme a little.....but if you release your angles to early in the downswing you actually lose at least 10 metres in distance.
Don't get confused with our releasing early technique and this drill. Yes we release from the top.....but it is a small turn.....and all the angles are "maintained throughout the swing".
You can try this drill at home. I think you will find it one of the most effective method's of keeping your body connected.
More golf instruction drills will be added as I take more video.
