Junior Golf Instruction

This page is dedicated to junior golfers and the golf instruction covers elements taught in our a perfect swing course here in Te Awamutu.

Shane Thompson is part of the Te Awamutu Golf clubs junior golf program, he is a member of the Junior Pennants Team and he currently plays off a 17 Handicap......not for long though as he shot a personal best of 80 and this included scoring an 8 on the 9th hole. Shane had only 10 putts in 9 holes after is golf instruction putting lesson

So our first lesson with Shane was a bit difficult for him as we had to make changes to his grip, his stance, the positioning of the club in his stance and the takeaway. So in short a major over haul.

The first part of our lesson started with what we call the "Little Shot" which is basically a little chipping motion that teachers the way we use the hands and mainly the wrist's in the "Take Away". Now if you have not used  your wrists before.... this simple exercise can be rather frustrating as Shane found out.

We use an "under style action" with our wrists not a round action as commonly taught. The under action actually keeps the head of the club in a squared position for a longer period in the backswing.

This drill that you have just watched is Shane using the under style cocking action to move the club head to a nine oclock position. As you would of noticed he actually goes past nine o'clock with the club head however his hands are in the right position.

From this position his hips especially his left hip and right knee are responsible for bringing the club into the releasing position. Basically what happens is the hips and knees blend in with the releasing of the club head.

This basic drill teachers the motion of the body. In the next video I want you to pay particular attention in the way Shane finishes his swing.

As a result of good body motion Shane is able to finish this swing up on his right toe. This position becomes automatic if you use the right body motions.

Our golf instruction for juniors focus's on learning the correct motion's which then enables the golfer to hit the ball to the desired target. I don't know whether you can see the poles down the driving range.....I asked Shane to pick one of them that was about 80 metres away and to aim at it using his wedge.

Not only did Shane hit this target once he actually hit the same pole with the very next shot!!!

For Shane's first lesson he has been able to hit his sand wedge further which as a result will make him more confident with his approach shot's and he has become more accurate. He suprised himself with the distance he got by basically only doing half shots.

But with any golf swing lesson nothing beat's good focused practice. One of thing's for Shane to learn is a much stronger grip position and to have the butt end of the club pointing to his left hip. He also realises now the importance of a good solid shoulder turn....this keeps us lifting our arms which is a negative in our golf swing method for junior golfers.
