PGA Golf Swing versus Mike Austin / Dan Shauger

It was a great pleasure for me to work with a PGA trainee teacher and share the techniques of Dan Shaugers concepts of Mike Austin golf swing.

Ken who you will see in the following videos played in some major New Zealand tournaments including the New Zealand Open back in the 1980's. After a 20 year lay off he has returned to playing golf in the last 3 months......already down to a 7 handicap!!!.

I suppose once you got it you never lose it.

His reasons for looking at Mike Austins golf swing method was mainly built around unfinished business in searching and understanding everything there is to know about the golf swing and golf swing methods.

Ken has written a thesis on the golf swing and know's more about it than most. Before starting our session I shared the overall concepts of "how we use our hands" and "how we use our body as levers". Ken understood levers very well and explained to me that is was similar to undoing a nut off a tyre. The little levers makes it a tough job, but once you apply a longer lever the nut comes off much easier.

In this first video Ken is warming up and practising with a 3/4 backswing

As you can see a nice and easy action

We did some drills first so Ken could grasp the "cocking under" of the hands. The cocking of the hands creates a flat wrist position at the top of the backswing which you will see in the next video.

This flat wrist or in some cases a slightly bowed position is an essential element for our golf swing method. The next essential element is the tilting of the hips from side to side. As our swing is not reliant on a rotational style as commonly taught we use different levers to achieve the same if not superior results.

The tilting of the hips saves any strain you may put on your back.

Watch Kens video on wrists position

After learning the hands and tilting action of the hips, Kens next challenge was to release the golf club from the top of the swing. Now as we know this is a BIG NO NO. However as Ken found out it allowed him to release the club head with more speed.

I have to admire our PGA trained golfer switching over to the "dark side" as everything we do is totally the opposite of what he has learnt and taught.

In his own words Ken was blown away about our concepts and how easy and simple it was to transfer from his swing to ours.

Another swing video

Just to summarise some key differences between our swing and the PGA

1. Cocking action of our hands is under or backward
2. Non rotation of the body, we rely on a tilting action of hips and spine
3. Non turning action of the chest, we don't turn through the ball with our chest
4. Releasing from the top of the swing is what gives us clubhead speed

Will keep you updated with Kens's progress and his views on the a "Perfect Golf Instruction" method
