Maori Golf Instruction has been part of Henare Perenara for over many years. He has been providing golf instruction to many Maori Golfers, especially the Maori Junior golfers.
Henare or Henry as many would know him by has been a scratch golfer for most of his golfing career and he is well known down in the Horowhenua region especially in and around Otaki.
His own Maori golf instruction website is hkmagic.co.nz an organisation set up to inspire the youth to become involved in golf especially Maori.
Henry has proven his teaching of Maori golf instruction by having many of his juniors reach single figures in a very short period of time…….one of them even reaching Professional playing status.
Now at the age of around 70 Henry is playing off a 10 handicap and has a goal to shoot his age……70. He recently came close with a 74 he shot at Levin’s 2011 36 Hole Golf Championship.
His two rounds of 78 and 74 were enough for him to actually win the Tournament.
However before this tournament Henry met me at Te Awamutu Golf Course where he was participating in the Maori National Golf Tournament. Next to his camper van he told me his story of how he came across the Mike Austin Method by Dan Shauger.
He said he had under gone surgery for both knees and he also had one of his hips replaced, obviously reducing his enjoyment of golf. He told me a friend of his gave him a book to read, “How to Kill the Ball” the formula for power and accuracy by Dan Shauger.
After reading through this manual it rekindled an urge in Henry and a motivation to try a method that might get him playing top golf again. Many of the principles of this golf instruction made sense to him and in fact he was already doing some of it naturally anyway…….it reinforced to him that his golf swing in itself was very good.
It was great for both of us involved in Maori Golf instruction to share experiences and methodologies. I helped Henry to understand our golf swing a little better by interpreting the “How to Kill the Ball” lessons……this provided him with a clearer understanding of the working and concepts of our golf swing.
After our catch up Henry went home and put what I had shared with him into practice. Then I got an excited phone call from him saying he had shot 74, and in his own words he blew the opportunity to shoot his age and it had nothing to do with the his golf swing…..just a couple of bad decisions.
Henry is still very motivated toward Maori Golf instruction and he is working on plans to expand his knowledge and understanding of golf for the many Maori Juniors.
The moral of this story is we are never to old to learn or to set goals which keeps us focused and motivated…….Henry is on a 9.5 index at the Levin Golf Club.
